What is Central Peace FCSS?
Family and Community Support Services is a partnership between the Province of Alberta, its Municipalities, and Métis Settlements, that develops locally driven, preventive social initiatives that enhance the well being of individuals, families, and communities. Each municipality has unique programming needs and is best able to determine what its own needs are.
The Central Peace FCSS is a co-operative partnership between the Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133, the Village of Rycroft, and the Town of Spirit River. Each member contributes funding to the program and works together with the others to deliver FCSS programming to their residents.
Central Peace FCSS:
- Mandate: Identify community issues and needs, review proposals, and make recommendations to the respective councils regarding funding of programs.
- Governed by a nine member board of directors.
- One council representative and two members-at-large each from:
- MD of Spirit River
- Village of Rycroft
- Town of Spirit River
- Meets once a month.
How is the Central Peace FCSS Program Funded?
Primarily funding comes through provincial FCSS grants received by the three participating municipalities. Funding is based per capita (the number of families living and paying taxes in the municipality). Participating municipalities designate a portion of their budget toward the Central Peace FCSS Program.
Secondary funding comes from independent grants to fund specific projects or initiatives that are not eligible "FCSS" expenses. E.g. the Breakfast for Learning Alberta Grant is applied for to fund the "Dine and Shine" Breakfast Program as the mandate of FCSS prohibits it from using provincial funding to purchase food.
Tertiary program funding comes through business and community contributions and partnerships. Community relationships are critical to the success of FCSS programs and are greatly appreciated.
